Un nouveau kit s’ajoute à mon éventail. Ce stylo solide est fait pour l’atelier ou pour les artistes. Sa mine de 5.6mm est facilement remplaçable dans les magasins de matériel d’artistes. Des mines de différentes couleurs sont aussi disponibles.

Dans le capuchon se cache un petit aiguisoir permettant de redonner à la mine une pointe fine. Ce crayon est revêtu de Cocobolo et la finition est un nouveau nommé Enduro, un polyuréthane à base d’eau. Reste à savoir si la durabilité du produit est bonne.

My latest creation. Was a bit scary to turn, not because I’m afraid of snakes but I was afraid to ruin the blank. According to the accompanying sheet, it doesn’t take much to ruin the skin even if it is covered in a layer of clear resin.

I was happy with the result so I figured I should give the blank a kit that would enhance. Since I had a Black Titanium Baron, in fountain, I decided to turn this into an awesome pen. If I can say so myself, I think I managed pretty well to achieve it.

The pen was turned as usual, wet sanded from 220 to 400 grit. Then I used wet MicroMesh from 1500 to 12000 grit. Finally I used Hut’s Plastic Polish. It shines like glass.

La construction est terminée. Reste à poser le velours drapé à l’intérieur des tiroirs. J’ai mis environ 90 heures sur le projet.

Queues d’arrondes à la main, oui monsieur. Seigneur que c’est long, surtout à cette taille.

Un stylo et un bouchon

J’ai eu un peu de temps aujourd’hui. En fait, c’est surtout que je voulais faire ces deux items comme cadeaux pour l’étudiante qui a passé deux mois et demi chez nous. Nous avons hébergé une très gentille étudiante de France pendant ces 10 dernières semaines. Comme souvenir, je voulais lui offrir un petit cadeau et aussi quelque chose pour ses parents. Voici donc les items: un stylo de modèle Sierra Platine et Titane Noir habillé de loupe d’érable du Manitoba et un bouchon de bouteille en chrome habillé d’ébène de Macassar.

Bouche bée ou Capuchon en olivier

Il arrive de ces moments où on ne sait trop que dire. Ce matin, je m’avoue légèrement troublé. La semaine dernière, ma douce conjointe m’a demandé de lui corriger un stylo que j’avais déjà fait car sa forme n’était pas extraordinaire. Je démontes donc le stylo et le replace sur le tour. A ce moment, je me suis que je devrais essayer quelque chose de neuf, un capuchon dans la même essence de bois que le corps du stylo. J’avais vu quelques photos sur des sites de tourneurs de stylo et ça me plaisait beaucoup. J’ai donc créé ce stylo:

Comme je le fais habituellement, je partage cette création avec d’autres sur différents sites: AtelierduStylo.ca, Penturner’s Paradise, The Pen Shop et International Association of Penturners (IAP). A ma très grande surprise, mon stylo se retrouve peu de temps après sur la page d’accueil du site IAP comme “Featured Photo“! Ayant vu précédemment les oeuvres extraordinaires des autres tourneurs mis en valeur, je me sens très flatté. Il est toujour agréable d’être valorisé mais là, je suis bouche bée.

I’m not professional photographer nor am I a pro pen turner either. Through some reading I have improved the quality of my pictures and although there is still some room for improvement, I’m sharing with you what I have learned.

The light tent is easy to build. I used some left over scraps of 2×4 and built 3 frames: 2 on the sides, one on top. The structure is about 12 inches x 12 inches. I placed white cardboard on the sides to reflect the light from the source. The top is also covered in white board but with a hole in the middle to let the light source shine through. I’m using white silk paper currently to act as a diffuser.

The light source consists in a lamp I bought at IKEA with a compact fluorescent bulb of the 5000-6500K color temperature. 6500K is considered daylight so it would give the truest color rendition. Two lamps would be better but this setup allows only for one because of the size.

The background is a beige suede fabric. I don’t like white backgrounds but wanted a neutral color. This all makes a lightweight setup that is easy to move around. Below the photo studio on the kitchen tables (besides my wife’s tomato planters for the garden).

Now for the tricky part. To have good color consistency, the camera needs to be white balance calibrated. Once the installation is done, a white carboard is placed in the light tent and the white is measured. (Check you camera’s manual to figure out how to do that). I don’t have a fancy camera. It’s an old Nikon 4 MP from 2002. Without proper calibration, the color of the pens will have an effect on the rest of the colors used, in this case, the background. Below, the same background used with two pens when no calibration is used.

Next, depth of field. This is adjusted by change the “F” setting on your camera (check your manuals). Crank it up to a high setting. I’m also using the Macro mode. A bigger “F”, gives more depth of field resulting in more of the picture being in focus.

If you look closely, you’ll notice that on the first picture, the middle of the pen is in focus, but the cap and nib are a bit fuzzy, and so is the background in front of the nib and behind the cap.

On the second picture, not only all the pen is in focus but so is all the fabric around. Magic? No, proper depth of field. Happy turning!

Je n’ai pas encore terminé mon coffret à stylos que je pense déjà à mon prochain projet. Afin de pouvoir compléter mes futurs projets et travailler adéquatement à la maison je vais avoir besoin d’un bon établi. Mais pas n’importe quel établi, un établi d’ébéniste mais en format réduit. Karel, avec qui je fais mes cours, à deux petits établis pour ses étudiants. Mon prochain projet sera de me construire un établi de ce type mais avec quelques modifications bien à moi. J’ai commencé à dessiner mon projet sur Sketchup.

LouisWorld est toujours là. Évidemment, jai encore une explication sur le manque de mise de mon site. Mes dernières semaines furent très occupées. En effet, j’ai participé à la traduction des instructions de stylos de William WoodWrite – PenBlanks.ca. Les versions traduites apparaissent lentement mais sûrement sur leur site. Je tiens à les féliciter de ce nouveau service et cette attention particulière auprès de leur clients francophones, et bien entendu, de m’avoir chois pour participer à cette traduction.

Pen cabinet

Wow, it’s been a long time since I wrote here… sorry about that. Well I thought I’d keep you all posted on the progress on my pen cabinet project I’m building in my woodworking class. It surely is a bigger task than I had anticipated. There’s lot to learn and even more to do. I’m currently tackling the drawers and I have to work at home on them because I’ll never finish in time. These drawers are a huge task and even when fully assembled, they’ll have to be covered in fabric and that’s also going to be a big project.

So far I’ve learned a lot from dovetails, rabbets, dadoes, biscuits, veneering, wood preparation and finishing, hand planing, and more.

From the original design, only a few minor changes have occurred. The dovetails are now half-blind, there’s only a single drawer pull per drawer and there’s a 1/4 inch strip of Wenge framing the face of the cabinet.

Une deuxième reconnaisance?

Le 15 octobre je parlais qu’un de mes stylos se retrouvait dans la “Newsletter” du mois d’octobre du site The Pen Shop. Bien j’y figure à nouveau dans celle de décembre avec mon premier bouchon de bouteille. Disons que j’ai été de nouveau très surpris… En parlant de bouchon, j’en ai fait un second cette fois avec un ensemble en titane noir mais encore en ébène asiatique. La forme est différente car elle est plus courte (je trouvais mon premier trop haut une fois sur une bouteille) et en forme de bouchon de champagne. Cependant, j’ai oublié de le prendre en photo avant de l’emballer pour la personne à qui je le remettais. Mais n’ayez crainte, j’en ferai d’autres
