A recent reorganization of the living room forced us to remove the bookcase serving as a DVD storage solution. A friend suggested we moved the unit into the side wall of the stairwell leading to the basement. This space is unused anyway. We looked at a few commercial solutions but nothing really pleased us so I decided to built it myself. Nothing fancy, but it was going to be the way we wanted it to look, gave us more storage than we had previously and allowed us to the top as a possible additional storage.
So I headed off to my local Rona and selected 4 boards of pine of 8 feet in length. I still had some stain left from the doggy bed project and we wanted the same color. The only other purchase was some brackets to help hold the units against the wall.
The construction is very simple, miter joints held up with glue, no nails, no nothing to have a cleaner look. The units are held up with a keyhole bracket screwed in the back side of the unit. To have a seemless look and make sure the holes are at the exact same height, I made a simple jig that allowed me to use my router along with bushings for consistency between all the units. This also ensure that the brackets were sitting flush with the face of the wood.
